I have seen countless tiktoks, instagram posts and facebook status surrounding weight gain during quarantine. I have tried to for my own mental health just ignore them and move on, but at the end of the day I think there is a stronger message that needs to be addressed. We cant control everything right now. Our lives have been tipped right on their head and we are facing a new normal that most likely is going to be around for a long time. It is normal for your weight to fluctuate during times of stress and uncertainty. Say that again to yourself slowly and really try your best to let it sink in.

Now do not get me wrong, I believe that it is probably more important then ever to take care of yourself (mentally and physically) to move your body, and to eat well, as we are all trying to avoid getting virus, but we also need to take the time to be gentle with ourselves. This is something that no one saw coming and it has changed everything we know.

I wanted to share what I feel like I can control during quarantine, and please notice that weight gain and body changes will not make this list. This list is also things that help me feel normal. Help me feel like I still have purpose, and help me get excited to get out of bed.

1) A schedule. This is by far the biggest thing for me that I have been able to control. I set an alarm every day. Its not for 4:15 am like it used to be, but I still everyday get up at 7am, make a coffee, do a workout (whatever my body feels like it needs that day) and go about my day doing things that I would normally do

2) Connecting with people. I vowed to myself after a really rough week that I would facetime at least one person every day. I am someone who thrives on personal connection and being around people I love, so connecting is one of the things that brings normalcy back into my life. I’ve also started new friendships over quarantine which has been amazing! All done through facetime.

3) I do one thing for myself, and only myself each day. This could be a nice bath, using a face mask, baking a loaf of bread. But its one thing for me that makes me happy and feel good.

4) Getting off the couch and outside. There is something medicinal about going for a walk, or sitting in my yard, or even going for a solo drive. Getting outside and changing the scenery makes a huge difference for me and can usually alter my mood in moments.

This list is something that I keep in my phone, it is something that I look at at the end of a hard day. I urge you to make a list of the things you can own, control and focus on in times when you need to shake off the things that you cant control or in the grande scheme of things dont actually matter!

I will end this by saying, not every day has to be a good day right now. Not every day needs to be productive. But I do believe giving yourself some control of even the little things during a time where it really does feel like we are grounded has allowed me to have at least double the good days to the bad.

Be gentle with yourself.
